Regarding grapefruits-have you seen Cagney in "Hard to Handle"? There's an extended gag about Cagney's promotion of a grapefruit diet in this movie. What a great painting and great portraits of Cagney! Didn't Wellman say he'd always wanted to do that, so he included it? Eh, maybe not, but that'd be cool. What a neat scene to paint! Great job.I always loved that. You know Cagney was a painter? And was so proud of that grapefruit scene! I'm sure he'd love this painting, too. Raquelle- I'll have to go watch some Nancy Drew films now for grapefruit inspiration :) I also think somebody was pretending to be somebody's husband? I'm almost positive there was a girl who owned and/or worked at a diner in New York, and was being courted by a client or protege of Hortons? There may have been music or opera singing involved, but I'm not sure. Not really a B-Movie but maybe an A- movie.

I think the most famous name in the movie was Horton's. It's not one of his more famous movies, like Top Hat, Gay Divorcee, etc. Anyway, love the painting of Cagney and Clarke! I know it's not Arsenic and Old Lace (I've seen that movie repeatedly over the years). Of course, that leaves a lot of movies it could be-The Front Page, The Merry Widow, The Gay Divorcee. I remember Horton's complaint about grapefruit, but I can't recall the movie. Great looking painting of Cagney and Clarke! It's not The Gay Divorcee? Or I don't know. That grapefruit-in-the-face painting is so epic. That Edward Everett Horton scene you mentioned sounds familiar, but I can't place it. Love the painting! Can't think of any grapefruit scenes, but I'll be on the lookout for them. lol I guess they didn't get along after their divorce but it's still an excellent scene. Did you hear what Mae Clark's ex-husband did? He went and saw the movie over and over again and every time that scene came on, he was cracking up. She always smacks them on the hand and proclaims "I was saving that for last!". While at breakfast she gets so excited over a case that she wants to get up and leave, and either her father or Ted want to steal the cherry. Bonita Granville's Nancy always has a half a grapefruit for breakfast with a cherry on top.

There is a wonderful series grapefruit-related scene in the Nancy Drew movies. You could call the two of them cocktail cousins.Bless your heart for painting that famous Grapefruit scene. The Paloma, however, relies on grapefruit juice, lime juice, and a splash of fizzy grapefruit soda for its tart, subtly sweet, citrus punch. While they both may be citrusy tequila cocktails, a classic margarita calls for lime juice and an orange liqueur that adds a touch of sweetness.

We don't recommend using an anejo tequilla, or one that has been aged for a long time in oak, because it will compete with the bright, refreshing flavors of the grapefruit soda. Tequila blanco is traditional, but you can also make this with a reposado tequila if you prefer. Just make sure what you grab is 100% grapefruit juice and not from concentrate. The store-bought stuff just isn't the same! However, in a pinch, you can use store-bought grapefruit juice to make a Paloma. There's no comparison to the taste of freshly-squeezed citrus juice, so it should always be your first choice.

We love the addition of lime for acidity and a more complex citrus flavor.ĭoes the grapefruit juice have to be fresh? For this latter approach, if you like a sweeter cocktail, you may want to add a dash of simple syrup or agave nectar. You can use any grapefruit flavored soda, like fresca or even Squirt, but it tastes equally as great with a mix of fresh squeezed grapefruit juice and sparkling water. Traditionally, a Paloma cocktail is made with tequila blanco and grapefruit flavored soda, like Jarritos de Toronja.

Pro tip: Go ahead and dip the rim of the glass in salt if that's your jam! Whether a Cinco de Mayo fiesta or a fun tacos for Taco Tuesday, just whip up a batch of Palomas to serve with a spread of Mexican food! If you're a big fan of margaritas and Ree Drummond's signature drink, Ranch Water, it's time to meet another tasty tequila cocktail-the Paloma! This recipe doubles down on grapefruit flavor with a little bit of fresh grapefruit juice and grapefruit soda! Fresh lime juice helps add more acidity to balance the sweetness of the soda and a pinch of salt in the glass rounds out all of the flavors.
